Well, I am at a loss... 1 year to almost the exact day of his first bloat Solomon has bloated for the 4th time in the last year!

After his Pexi surgery in July last year we had a few months on wellness before his health went drematically down hill last November, it was over varying factors that in fact the vets and specialists never got the the bottom of. In amongst this he bloated again at the end of January, the pecsi held and he was home bright as a button wihtin 24 hrs from then on his health improved, he started to put on some weight and we were hopefull it was all behind us.

I think it was 6 weeks ago that we suffered another attack and again an overnight stay at the vets with Xrays and gas release resulted in him bounding home like nothing had happened.

2.30 last night was bloat number 4 and I am beside myself. Solomon is the happiest chap ever who has had a really tough time of it and all Iwant is for him to be healthy but it's not that simple.

He's fed 3 times a day sometimes leaving his food and finishing it off at bed time, he's walked no sooner than an hour before and over two hours after, we keep him as stress free as possible by ensuring he eats in his own space and in his own time. The other dogs are kept away from him and he has no contact at all with Hugo who over the last 4 months has taken to fighting with him every time they get near each other.
18hrs ago I we were comenting on how healthy he looked, how happy he is and just so full of beans but here we are again, for the 4th time.

We are waiting a call from teh vets but have spoken to a nurse this morning who has commented on how well he is, that he has passed a poo and youwould never know he had come in like he did last night.

I am just so scared that this will happen to him when we are not about and the end result will be devestating. We have been so lucky that I have spotted it early enough on all 4 occasions and kept calm, got him to the vets all in good time. How do I make a decision about his future knowing that apart from this he is such a happy boy who enjoys everything and everyone about him. Are we being selfish bringing him home or are we doing what's best for him!?! I really don't know and these thougths are pretty much sending me potty.

Has anyone and a dog suffer this many attacks to now be living a happy and healhly older life? Solomon is only 3.5yrs.

Jacqui

I can't begin to imagine what you are (and have) been going through with Solomon. I have no experience of bloat but my gut feeling is that while he recovers so well and the vets can treat him (and being very mercenary you can afford the bills), as long as Solomon has a good quality of life the rest of the time you can do no more for him than give him the love and care you obviously already do.

Wishing him a speedy recovery, with slobbers and xxx from Sasha & Amy and a big hug to you from me.

That must be very hard to live with.

Unfortunately the chances are that he will continue to do this - once they have bloated they are much more at risk of it happening again, as you know. What advice have you had from the vet? Can he suggested something you can give post-mealtime? I don't know what you are feeding now, but have you thought about changing his diet to try to cut down fermentation and gas production?

Fingers crossed he makes a quick recovery.

My heart goes out to you Jacqui. My Sam was a constant bloater like Solomon but his stomach could go up sometimes 6 times a day. We were never out of the vets at one time. We went through all the checks, food, walks, stress. Nothing seemed to trigger it off. After being tubed so many times (3 times in one week alone) our vet did say if the anaesthetic didn't finish him the bloat would. We lived like this for 15 months I stopped wrapping him in cotton wool and treated him like before this all happened. After each episode he was as good as before. Sammy's final one happened so fast and he died in my arms.

I have been asked if I could have him back knowing what it would be like and for the 2 years he was with us, would I?? Like a shot

Keep doing everything you are and just give him extra hugs every day.

Helen, would you post the link to the product on here please? I for one don't have a FB account and I'm sure there are others who would find it helpful :).

Under digestive products click on Dogszymes Digestive Enhancer. It's a powder and you put like a teaspoon in their food and it's supposed to prevent bloat. Apparently some people swear by it. I think I will get some for JJ who bloated last New Year's Eve.

They send it from the States to the UK. I know people who buy it. I am going on the site to buy some later today. If I have any problems I'll talk to a friend and let you know what you need to do.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts.

Solomon is back home and bright as a button, thankfully.

I will be ordering the suplement this afternoon, I see you have to call if you are buying internationally, thank you Helen for all your help and support.

We have decided to carry on as we have been and try not to allow it to effect our everyday lives with the dogs.

We have been feeding him on Chappie since he torsioned last year, non fermenting and tasty enough the he's actually eating it, which has always been a struggle with him. I attmepted to feed them a raw diet but only one out of the three were interested and he will eat anything!

We will focus on everyday that he is wagging his tail so bad his whole body moves, is play fieting with his brother and generally getting up to misschief. Should it strike again I can only pray that we will be on hand to deal with it quickly and that the Pecksi he had last year does it's job and holds.

Give Solomon a big hug from me and his 2 sisters, brother, mum and uncle here!!! So pleased he's doing well and back home!

I ordered a 5lb tub of the Dogszymes Digestive Enhancer for my lot. I was told it lasts a long time for the number of Danes I have. It comes highly recommended by people over here who give it to their Danes to avoid bloat. They reckon none of the dogs on it have bloated and they have been giving it to them for some years.

Cheryl, you need to phone to put your order through. It's a toll free number and you give them your card details over the phone.

I bought a bag of this food at a dog show a few weeks ago, its claims it will not expand in the dogs stomach if thats what is causing the bloat, but i have heard of dogs bloating who have not even eated but here is the link to this food company I thinks its made in spain is 74 percent fresh chicken so they claim http://www.platinumpetfood.com

Helen

Do you give it to all your Danes or just JJ?
